Philanthropy

This is your year...to be a legend in our community

Pi Beta Phi has a long, full history that is rich with tradition and values. One of our most cherished traditions is philanthropy and community service. We promote the mindset that it is our obligation to support our communities and enrich the lives of others. By giving of time, money and self, Pi Phis reveal themselves as true angels. Pi Beta Phi Fraternity has been committed to education and literacy since the founding of the Settlement School in 1910. In 1990 Links to Literacy was established. This tradition has continued and we now can boast a multifaceted literacy outreach to the communities we serve. As a local club, we have been doing our part to enhance our community as well as promote and support Pi Phi’s international programs.

We are what legends are made of! As a local club, we have been doing our part to enhance our community as well as promote and support Pi Phi's national programs. The Phoenix Alumnae Club is committed to supporting the following causes:

Pi Beta Phi International Donations
A portion of each member’s local dues is donated to Pi Beta Phi’s international philanthropic activities including Arrowmont (Settlement School), Holt House, Friendship Foundation, and the Foundation for Undergraduate Scholarships.

Pi Beta Phi Corporate Partnership

In June 2007, Pi Phi announced its corporate partnership with First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their firs t new books. Together, through innovative programs such as Speed Read and the Bookplate Program (happening in Spring 2008), First Book and Pi Beta Phi are committed to bringing new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada. For more information about First Book, go to www.firstbook.org. Pi Beta Phi is also featured on their informational Web site, www.theliteracysite.com.

Chrysalis Shelter Phoenix Literacy Partnership

We are very excited to announce our partnership with Chrysalis Shelter this year. Both the alumnae club and the collegians from Arizona State University are going to support this amazing organization with our time, talents and passion for promoting literacy. We are beginning the partnership by volunteering at the shelters and ultimately working toward providing the Phoenix shelter with its very own Pi Beta Phi Library. We will volunteer and stock this library for years to come. Chrysalis has a 25-year history of serving the Valley. They offer a comprehensive array of programs for families affected by domestic abuse, including crisis shelters, two locations here in the valley. To learn more, visit their Web site, www.noabuse.org.

Champions Are Readers (CAR) Literacy Program
In order to support our Link to Literacy plan, a national program has been set up called Champions Are Readers (CAR). The Phoenix Alumnae Club and the collegiate women of Arizona Beta will again tailor this program to this year's five 3rd grade classrooms at Creighton Elementary School. This program has been a huge success in the past and we are looking forward to making it even better this spring!

Pi Beta Phi National Day of Service — Read Across America
This annual event unites the entire Pi Beta Phi membership alumnae groups, collegiate chapters, and individual membersin efforts to advance literacy. Read Across America is a reading motivation and awareness p rogram that takes place each year on or around March 2, which is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America enlists individuals and organizations across the country to plan and execute activities that will bring reading excitement to children of all ages. The Phoenix Alumnae Club Champion's Are Readers (CAR) program will culminate with activities in support of this initiative. For more information, visit the NEA Web site at www.nea.org.

Assistance League of Phoenix

During the Pi Beta Phi Convention in Phoenix/Scottsdale this year, we were exposed to a wonderful organization called the Assistance League of Phoenix. With the proceeds from Literacy Walk at convention, Pi Beta Phi gave $10,000 to Assistance League of Phoenix. With this money they provided dictionaries to 5th and 6th graders in the valley with bookplates spelling out the Pi Beta Phi and Assistance League partnership. Locally we are also going to assist Assistance League literacy programming. Our book club interest groups are going to help with the LEARN program by reading "Books On Tape" to help children learn English and vocabulary words. We will also be assisting in their Operation School Bell program by helping them to collect books for the K-4th grade students they help in elementary schools all over the valley. Check out their website for more information on their organization and their philanthropic programming: phoenix.assistanceleague.org

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Again this year we helped to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by participating in the Phoenix Race for the Cure on October 14, 2007. The Komen Foundation began in 1982 as a result of a promise between two sisters.

We as Pi Beta Phi sisters show our support for their pursuit of a cure for breast cancer, a disease that has affected so many of our lives in one way or another. The alumnae club and the collegians of the Arizona Beta chapter formed a t eam to walk and show our support. We had a great turnout at this event and we showed Phoenix what we are made of!

Crisis Nursery
Crisis Nursery exists to provide hope and support through prevention and protection to children in our community threatened with abuse, neglect or homelessness. The Phoenix Alumnae Club will be working together with the collegiate w omen of Arizona Beta to donate time and needed supplies to the Nursery. We sponsored a pumpkin party for the children living in the shelter in October. To learn more about Crisis Nursery, please visit their Web site, www.crisisnurseryphx.com.

Relay for Life
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. In support of the American Cancer Society, the alumnae club will support the Arizona Beta collegians in their walk by raising money for their ASU Relay for Life event. The money raised goes directly to those in our community affected by cancer.

FBR Open PGA Golf Tournament
The Phoenix Alumnae Club is responsible for recruiting more than 100 volunteers to work concession stand shifts at the FBR Open PGA golf tournament on behalf of the Phoenix Panhellenic Association. In exchange for our donation of time and labor at this event, several thousand dollars is donated annually by the Thunderbirds organization for scholarships for worthy Greek women pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees in Arizona. In sum, our involvement with the FBR Op en has contributed to funding over $245,000 in scholarships over the last 12 years, with over 22 Pi Phi recipients. All volunteers receive a free, transferable one-week pass to the Open. Friends and family may work along with you on behalf of Pi Phi. To sign up, complete the FBR Open Volunteer Sign-up Form. Fundraising Efforts to Support Philanthropic Efforts

Pi Phi Phi-nal Bags for Arizona Beta and Arizona Gamma collegians

Each semester during final exams week the club prepares and delivers finals week care packages to the collegians at ASU and NAU. Each package contains school supplies, toiletries, food and snack items and other goodies along with a special note from the parents who sponsor the program.

Holiday Greenery Program

The holiday greenery program was introduced last year with great success. Our provider, Sherwood Forest Farms has a beautiful selection of fundraising products including holiday wreaths, swags, centerpieces and garlands. All products are fresh and come direct from the grower in the Pacific Northwest. Comparable products sell for twice the cost, so they are a great value.

These items are perfect for holiday decorating and also make great gifts for business associates, friends and family who live anywhere across the country. Shipping and handling is included in the price for direct delivery (Alaska and Hawaii have additional charges). When you make a purchase, the club receives a portion of the proceeds which helps support our philanthropic efforts. Please share this information with your friends, family and neighbors!

For more information and to see a complete line of products or place an order visit, www.sherwoodforestfarms.com

First Book Speed Read

A First Book Speed Read is a playful fundraising event with a tangible impact: every $2.50 generated places a brand new book into the hands of a child in need. Speed Readers are challenged to read as many words as they can out loud from a classic child's book in 15 seconds. Speed Readers get sponsors to support their participation with a donation. Speed Readers will then face off at the CAR closing ceremony at Creighton School, stepping up in turns in front of students, teachers and alumnae. A First Book Speed Read Champion will be crowned. Funds generated from the event help First Book and Pi Phi bring new books to kids in need.
