Pi Beta Phi Corporate Partnership
In June 2007, Pi Phi announced its corporate partnership with First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their firs t new books. Together, through innovative programs such as Speed Read and the Bookplate Program (happening in Spring 2008), First Book and Pi Beta Phi are committed to bringing new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada. For more information about First Book, go to www.firstbook.org. Pi Beta Phi is also featured on their informational Web site, www.theliteracysite.com.
Chrysalis Shelter Phoenix Literacy Partnership
We are very excited to announce our partnership with Chrysalis Shelter this year. Both the alumnae club and the c ollegians from Arizona State University are going to support this amazing organization with our time, talents and passion for promoting literacy. We are beginning the partnership by volunteering at the shelters and ultimately working toward providing the Phoenix shelter with its very own Pi Beta Phi Library. We will volunteer and stock this library for years to come. Chrysalis has a 25-year history of serving the Valley. They offer a comprehensive array of programs for families affected by domestic abuse, including crisis shelters, two locations here in the valley. To learn more, visit their Web site, www.noabuse.org.

Champions Are Readers (CAR) Literacy Program
In order to support our Link to Literacy plan, a national program has been set up called Champions Are Readers (CAR). The Phoenix Alumnae Club and the collegiate women of Arizona Beta will again tailor this program to this year's five 3rd grade classrooms at Creighton Elementary School. This program has been a huge success in the past and we are looking forward to making it even better this spring!
Pi Beta Phi National Day of Service — Read Across America
This annual event unites the entire Pi Beta Phi membership — alumnae groups, collegiate chapters, and individual
members — in efforts to advance literacy. Read
Across America is a reading motivation and awareness p rogram
that takes place each year on or around March 2, which
is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Sponsored by the National Education
Association (NEA), Read Across America enlists individuals
and organizations across the country to plan and execute
activities that will bring reading excitement to children
of all ages. The Phoenix Alumnae Club Champion's Are Readers
(CAR) program will culminate with activities in support
of this initiative. For more information, visit the NEA
Web site at www.nea.org.
Assistance League of Phoenix
During the Pi Beta Phi Convention in Phoenix/Scottsdale this year, we were exposed to a wonderful organization called the Assistance League of Phoenix. With the proceeds from Literacy Walk at convention, Pi Beta Phi gave $10,000 to Assistance League of Phoenix. With this money they provided dictionaries to 5th and 6th graders in the valley with bookplates spelling out the Pi Beta Phi and Assistance League partnership. Locally we are also going to assist Assistance League literacy programming. Our book club interest groups are going to help with the LEARN program by reading "Books On Tape" to help children learn English and vocabulary words. We will also be assisting in their Operation School Bell program by helping them to collect books for the K-4th grade students they help in elementary schools all over the valley. Check out their website for more information on their organization and their philanthropic programming: phoenix.assistanceleague.org
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Again this year we helped to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by participating in the Phoenix Race for the Cure on October 14, 2007. The Komen Foundation began in 1982 as a result of a promise between two sisters.
We as Pi Beta Phi sisters show our support for their pursuit of a cure for breast cancer, a disease that has affected so many of our lives in one way or another. The alumnae club and the collegians of the Arizona Beta chapter formed a t eam to walk and show our support. We had a great turnout at this event and we showed Phoenix what we are made of!
Crisis Nursery
Crisis Nursery exists to provide hope and support through prevention and protection to children in our community threatened with abuse, neglect or homelessness. The Phoenix Alumnae Club will be working together with the collegiate w omen of Arizona Beta to donate time and needed supplies to the Nursery. We sponsored a pumpkin party for the children living in the shelter in October. To learn more about Crisis Nursery, please visit their Web site, www.crisisnurseryphx.com.
Relay for Life
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. In support of the American Cancer Society, the alumnae club will support the Arizona Beta collegians in their walk by raising money for their ASU Relay for Life event. The money raised goes directly to those in our community affected by cancer.
FBR Open PGA Golf Tournament
