Connect with Pi Phi through Philanthropy

Pi Beta Phi has a long history rich with tradition and values.  One of our most cherished traditions is that of philanthropy and community service. We believe it is our obligation to support our communities and enrich the lives of others.  By giving of time, resources and self, Pi Phis reveal themselves as true angels. Pi Beta Phi Fraternity has been committed to education and literacy since the founding of the Settlement School in 1910. As a local club, we have been doing our part to enhance our community as well as promote and support Pi Phi’s international programs.

Local Community Support
The Phoenix Alumnae Club is also deeply invested in the local community, where we choose to support additional, non-literacy groups to offer our members the chance to get involved with local causes that are important to them. Our support is driven by member input each year. You can see which groups we are currently engaged with by visiting our Events page. If you have questions or would like to recommend a service partner, reach out to philanthropy@phoenixpibetaphi.org to connect with our VP Philanthropy.

Local Literacy Initiatives
Literacy is the core of our philanthropic mission, which is why we support a variety of local nonprofits to carry out Pi Beta Phi’s commitment to literacy. Through partnerships with Kids Need to Read and Brunson-Lee Elementary, we volunteer our time to make sure kids throughout the Phoenix metro area have access to books and have confidence in their reading skills.  Check out our Events page for upcoming volunteer opportunities and reach out to philanthropy@phoenixpibetaphi.org to connect with our VP Philanthropy.

Fundraising and Pi Beta Phi Foundation
Our club understands the impact and importance of financial support and is committed to fundraising for our Foundation and local initiatives.  The Phoenix Alumnae Club is proud of our multiple years of recognition as a Top 10 Club for Foundation Giving with the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, a title we have earned consistently since 2014. We host annual giving campaigns where our members can support the Foundation directly with tax-deductible donations, as well as other small fundraisers throughout the year.  We also volunteer annually at the Charles Schwab Cup, where our concession shifts earn funds that are donated to the Foundation. Reach out to fundraising@phoenixpibetaphi.org with questions about our fundraising efforts.

Kids Need To Read
Founded with a passion to improve the lives of disadvantaged children by providing inspiring book collections and engaging literacy programs to underfunded schools, libraries, and organizations across the nation, Kids Need to Read aspires to empower and embolden every last child through a culture of reading. For many of the children it serves, Kids Need to Read represents a crucial link to a strong literacy education, and its programs help build and nurture support systems that these children may be lacking elsewhere in their lives. By immersing children in an integrated world of literary experiences that teach them, firsthand, the impact of reading on every aspect of life, imagination is ignited and confidence is built for a prosperous future, regardless of race, economic status, or personal capabilities.

Started in 2008 and based in Mesa, Arizona, Kids Need to Read is the club's most recent local literacy partner. The Phoenix Alumnae Club has provided support through book donations, Local Impact Grants from the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, and co-hosting events at Brunson-Lee Elementary.  We are looking forward to growing this relationship and impacting lives at the local level.

Waste Management Phoenix Open PGA Golf Tournament
The Club is responsible for recruiting more than 100 volunteers to work concession stand shifts at the WM Phoenix Open PGA golf tournament on behalf of the Phoenix Panhellenic Association. In exchange for our donation of time and labor at this event, the Thunderbirds organization donates over $20,000 annually to scholarships for worthy Greek women pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees in Arizona.  All volunteers receive a free, transferable one-week pass to the Open. Friends and family may work along with you on behalf of Pi Phi.

  • Champions are Readers (CAR) Program

The Club partners with AZ Beta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi to run the CAR program annually at a local underperforming elementary school, supporting literacy through tailored reading interventions. Members volunteer to create a nurturing environment, improving reading skills and confidence in children. This reflects the Club’s commitment to educational outreach and community support.

  • Fraternity Day of Service

The National Education Association, through its Read Across America program, has identified March 2 as a day to celebrate literacy and the love of reading.  Pi Phi has selected this well-known day of reading celebration as its own Fraternity Day of Service. The Phoenix Alumnae Club implements the service project at a local school or library. The event is designed to raise awareness about the Fraternity’s literacy efforts.  In 2015 and 2019, we were honored to be chosen by the Pi Beta Phi Foundation as one of the few cities to host a Fraternity Day of Service Signature Event, where we were able to distribute 20,000 books to local schools and organizations. We're so grateful we've been able to distribute over 40,000 books to local schools and nonprofits!

  • Brunson-Lee Elementary Birthday Books

Once a month, volunteers help students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade choose a new book during their birthday month.
